La traviata
Folkoperan
Amid swingers and love-starved drag queens, La Traviata unfolds at Folkoperan. Several internationally renowned singers have now been selected.
Verdi’s opera La Traviata is a passionate drama—a struggle between convention and the forbidden, the boundless. The music captures the longing we all carry. Raw. Body-formed. In mustaches, bras, or riding crops. Or just an ordinary evening gown.
Traditionally, many relationships of desire and power have been forbidden for women. In 1850s Paris, where La Traviata is set, a new urban landscape emerged, making new gender roles possible. Bourgeois women who didn’t want to marry could cross the old boundaries. We want to explore whether it’s possible for Violetta to become a sexual subject. That is the starting point for this production, says Folkoperan’s artistic director and director Mellika Melouani Melani.
