The Merchant's Contracts
The Royal Dramatic Theatre
“The Merchant’s Contract” is the Nobel laureate in literature Elfriede Jelinek's own story about the financial crisis, performed at The Royal Dramatic Theatre’s Målarsal. The play is a furious outburst about the true nature of the banking system in the final stages of capitalism.
The stage is filled with flashing video projectors, roaring speakers, billowing smoke machines, and small video cameras being moved around the room. The performance “Die Kontrakte des Kaufmanns” received glowing reviews at its German premiere in Cologne in 2009.
The newspaper “Die Welt” wondered in its review whether it was time to award Elfriede Jelinek the economics prize in memory of Alfred Nobel as well.
